Transformational Coaching

I have seen many people over the years who had desired to change themselves and they completely reinvented themselves. For example, "One of the leaders' goal was to move himself from a demanding and destroying boss to a kind and approachable one with building strong relationship with other leaders around him." That's a very difficult goal to set for yourself in the latter half of your life.

However, after the course of six months, a leader actually transformed himself into the kind and approachable boss with Transformational Coaching. Even a feedback from his peers confirmed that, he was altogether a different person. This kind of scenario could happen with the practice of transformational coaching.

It sounds like a complicated process but really, it is not. Here are the basic principles to reinvent yourself that can be used in Transformational Coaching:

Transformational Coaching

1. Teachable Moments:

It is not the case that people wake up one day and decide, "I will become a different person altogether." It takes a powerful and painful experience to motivate an individual to make such a big decision.
As a transformational coach, one needs to be alert of such major events in the clients and should help them to leverage for the personal transformation rather than only surviving them. The greatest challenge for a person is to contain the seeds of big opportunities for personal growth. If you feel that you are losing those seeds for personal growth, you have to engage your transformational coach so he would be aware of what you are going through.

2. Action Oriented Transformational Coaching:

Once, I met an individual who was looking to change himself in order to come alive emotionally after having muffled the feelings over the period of time and his Transformational Coach. The coach told me that he would have easily taken the approach of counseling, seeking to the roots of the problems and offering their healings. But rather, he stuck to the coaching approach by just following the practical lessons. Not to the surprise of more people, it actually worked.

The coach had built up new plans every week for a person to live happy in his regular routines and letting off some money every week rather than hoarding it. With the practice of those action as habits, a coach was able to bring about the changes in the mind of an individual who, in turn, was able to create the emotions.

Transformational coaching can work for you, especially if you are truly committed to becoming the best person or leader that you could ever be!

Life Coaching vs Therapy

As Life Coaching becomes a more popular method of navigating life's complex paths, there are a lot of questions about whether or not it is traditional therapy, how it may relate to therapy, or if they are interchangeable.

In therapy, the focus is on dealing with the past. Therapists lead their clients through the healing process, helping them develop coping skills that they can eventually use on their own, once they have achieved wholeness. A skilled therapist can help clients reach the source of their fears - the obstacles that typically prevent us from achieving our highest potential.

In Life Coaching, the focus is on the present and the future. Coaching clients may have already experienced therapy and will therefore expect the same type of experience. However, as a Co-Active Coach®, I work hand-in-hand with my clients as they lead the way. A skilled Life Coach helps clients manage their fears, minimizing them so that they can live a healthy life and achieve even higher goals. The Life Coach also helps clients uncover hidden passions, resulting in a more fulfilled life that is focused on values-based decisions. She holds her clients as creative, resourceful, and whole from the very beginning of the relationship.

Life Coaching vs Therapy

Traditional therapy and Life Coaching can complement each other. However, if a therapist is using coaching techniques, it is best if the client knows that a coaching technique is being applied. The client is empowered in a much more holistic way whenever coaching techniques are used to enhance the client's therapy experience.

As a Life Coach, I am trained to listen for cues and to use my training, intuition, curiosity, experience, and resources. With all these "tools," I guide my clients down the paths that they themselves choose. In most cases, my clients are not even aware of the paths that they have already unconsciously chosen. That's where my expertise as a Life Coach comes into play. We walk these paths together, discovering new dreams, goals, and opportunities. The result is a more fulfilled, balanced life for each of my clients, and, in many cases, a new direction toward a dream previously unrealized.

Life Coaching vs Therapy

Does Coaching Involve Teaching?

Although coaching will result in the person being coached to learn something, that really is not the point of coaching. A coach is someone who deals with, helps and trains those who have already learned more than the basics of what they are involved in. The coach normally comes after the teacher has taught a person the basic grounding in a sport or subject and the coach is there to help them achieve their goals or become better at what they are doing.

A coach is different from a teacher or even a counselor in that they get people to excel in helping them with goal setting, encouragement and answering their questions but a coach rarely offers or gives advice. Many people believe a coach provides expert opinions and "how to" advice and answers to the people they coach. This is not the case in that it is not their job to give a solution to a problem but to rather show those being coached how to solve the problem or a question themselves.

The origin of coaching seems to go back to the mid 1800s in traditional English universities where the students were helped by others to pass their exams successfully. This began to be known as "cramming" (as it still is today) and those that helped the students became known as the coaches. By the late 1800s American college sports teams started having their own coaches too.

Does Coaching Involve Teaching?

It was only a short time later that the non-sporting coach started to appear and during the 20th century people who were not experts in the chosen field of those they were coaching started to emerge because they only needed to offer more general motivation and inspirational advice. In the last 20 years this industry has exploded with all kinds of people entering the field of personal to business coaches through to sports and fitness coaching.

Today the business of coaching has expanded all over the world in both sporting and the non-sporting environments and listed below is a sampling of the diversity of the coaching industry. You can have individual coaching or personal coaching which is often referred to or marketed as life coaching. Along side this there is the more traditional area of team coaching and as with individual coaching, team coaching focuses on improving performance.

Coaching itself can be broken down further into organizational coaching, business and executive coaching, systemic coaching, dissertation coaching, all the way though to dating, co-coaching, music and leadership coaching, to list only a few areas.

Today coaching in both the sports and non-sporting environments does involve some form of teaching (although it is more learning through what those being coached pick up) but focuses more on non-directive questioning and provocation to help teams and clients to analyze and solve their own challenges and problems, rather than offering advice or direction in solving them.

In the very competitive world we live in many national teams that do not win consistently will consider replacing the coach before changing the make-up of their team. So you will also find 'the coach', in many instances, is "result driven" - if they want to hold on to their position.

Fun Volleyball Drills

One challenge that every sports coach eventually must face is making practices fun. While repetitive drills are necessary for building skill and muscle memory, when players become accustomed to certain drills they are more inclined to turn their minds off and go through the motions. Instead, coaches must continually rotate drills and add fun and exciting new ones to their practice line up to keep players focused and sharp. Feel free to use one of the following fun volleyball drills at your next practice to break up the routine and challenge your players in new ways.

Bingo Volleyball

For the first of these fun volleyball drills you will need a large sheet of white paper and a black marker. Begin by brainstorming a list of some of the crucial skills and moves that your players need help with such as perfect dig, block, spike, etc. Once you've come up with at least 25 draw a bingo card on the sheet of paper, filling each of the squares with one of the skills and post it next to the court.

Fun Volleyball Drills

Now divide your team into groups of six for scrimmage. The teams play against each other as if it were a regular match with one key difference: each time they successfully execute one of the aforementioned moves, they earn that spot on the bingo card. Players must call the move before the execute it to earn the spot on the card.

The goal is to make a line of 5, at which point all members of the team must yell "Bingo". This game causes players to come up with a game plan that successfully incorporates the necessary moves to make a line of 5, which can often be radically different from their normal game plan.

Hit the Deck!

When searching for fun volleyball drills remember that the emphasis does not always have to be on hitting the ball. Volleyball requires many other skills that are often less recognized, such as the ability to drop and hit the floor without fear or hesitation. The following drill, which we call "Hit the Deck", will help your players overcome that hesitation.

Begin by having your players jog on the spot. Either at the sound of your whistle or when you yell the words "Hit the Deck", all players must drop to the floor instantly. If you'd like to up the competitive spirit of the drill, you can enforce a rule where the last player to hit the floor is out.

Building Defensive Toughness

The third of the fun volleyball drills I like to use to change up my practice routines is a simple variation on 2-on-6. For this drill, one team has 6 players and the other has only 2. To begin with, have the strongest players on your team as the outnumbered ones.

The 6-player team begins by serving the ball within two steps of a member of the 2-player team. The goal is not to try and humiliate the 2-player team; rather the goal is to have them get down and play defense. You'll really begin to notice your players develop their defensive toughness after running the fun drill at a couple of your practices.

Coaching Tools 101 - The Wheel of Life - 11 New and Improved Uses For the Ultimate Coaching Tool

The Wheel of Life may be 'old hat' to us coaches, but it's a powerful visual coaching tool with many uses in the coaching world. In fact it may just be the best and most flexible coaching tool -- in any coach's toolbox.

We forget that The Wheel of Life is still new to most of our clients. And even when they have come across it before it will tell them something new when they use it again, because like most coaching tools it can only catch how someone feels at a moment in time.

So, apart from the common use of the wheel to look at life balance, how else can we use The Wheel of Life to help our clients? Here are 11 new and improved uses for The Wheel of Life:
Use The Wheel of Life to help your clients set meaningful goals. Areas with low scores are ideal candidates for your clients to set bigger goals around. Tip: This is an especially useful tool for business and career/executive coaches -- to edge left-brained clients into 'softer' areas that improve their whole lives. Which will, of course, benefit their careers and businesses in the long run. Use a wheel to drill down and help your clients understand their lives and issues more deeply. Take one of the segments or categories and ask them to delve deeper by writing out 8 areas that make up that segment for them. Tip: Eg. a 'Finance' wheel could include saving for a house or wedding, spending less/budgeting, saving for retirement, paying off credit cards, getting a better paid job etc. Help your clients see how far they've come. Use The Wheel of Life monthly or quarterly with your clients, as both a check-in to see how they're doing AND as a way for them to see how they've improved and grown. Improved scores demonstrate concrete value from coaching and help clients see their learnings and progression. Tip: It's a bit like looking back over an old journal and seeing how far you've come! De-stress your Clients! What about The Wheel of Stress of The Wheel of Frustration? Take the usual 'life balance' categories off the wheel and help your client 'free think' through their issues. Get them to label the top 8 areas that stress them out or frustrate them most. Ask them to score HOW stressful and frustrating each of their areas is out of 10 -- and review the results with them. Tip: Ask, which area stresses them out the most? Are there any surprises? How could they lower their scores? Help your clients get excited about life! How about The Wheel of Happiness, Fun or even Excitement? Depending on what your client needs/is looking for, ask your client to come up with 8 areas or things that are fun or make them excited or happy. Label the wheel segments accordingly and ask your client for an action or commitment for each segment. What do they notice? How could they bring more of each segment into their lives? Tip: Help them find multiple wins, ie. areas where one action raises their score across a number of areas? For Business Coaches, use the wheel to identify Sales and/or Marketing actions for your clients. Take a blank wheel and add the key areas where your clients need to take action. Ask your clients come up with actions for each to complete in the next month. Tip: For example, a Marketing Wheel might include the following; online social networks, SEO, article marketing, traditional networking, newsletter, trade shows, advertising, seminars. Priorities Management. What are your client's top priorities -- this could be at work, home or life in general. Ask your client to label each segment and specifically identify their top 3 priorities. Then get them to score their satisfaction out of 10 for each area. Tip: What do they notice? Do they have their priorities 'straight' or do they need to shift their focus? What actions could they take to improve their scores? Understanding what's TRULY important in life. Get your client to list or brainstorm their priorities or goals - asking them to list everything they want to "Be, Do and Have" in life is a great way to do this. Now ask them to take each priority or goal and go around the Wheel of Life 'balance' categories and ask, "Will achieving this improve my satisfaction in this area?" and for each area that is improved, that goal gets a point. Then you review which goals get the highest and lowest scores. What do they notice? What have they learned? This helps people to see what will truly make a difference in their lives as opposed to what they think will improve their lives. Tip: Let's assume your client wants to buy a Ferrari. Will it improve their Finances? No. Will it improve their relationships with family and friends? Probably not. Will it improve their Career? Unlikely. Will it improve their Fun? Yes. And so on until you get a score of perhaps 2 out of a possible 8. Now take being a great Dad. It may not improve your finances or your career (although you never know) but it will help your family relationships, fun, health, personal growth etc so you perhaps get a score of 6 out of 8. Identifying skill gaps for promotions/new jobs/careers. Use a blank wheel and get your client (or you can do this beforehand) to label the Top 8 Skills they will need to get the job or promotion they want. Now get them to score, out of 10, where they are at the moment against each of the skills. Finally assign an action against each of the skill areas where they need to boost their skills. Tip: You could even ask them to identify an action for areas where they score highly, "What could they do to truly excel at that skill?" Help your clients identify what they are looking for in a relationship. This is called The Relationship Wheel. So, take a blank wheel and ask your client to label the segments with the 8 qualities an ideal partner would have. This MUST be done by the client! And then ask them to give a score as to how IMPORTANT out of 10 each quality is. This will help them identify whether being attractive or romantic is as important as being reliable, having a good sense of humour or a good parent. Tip: You can even use the strategy outlined earlier in number 8 where you take each personal quality they've listed, and give it a point for each area on the Wheel of Life that it improves. Which qualities will truly make a difference in their lives? General Action Planning. Simply use a blank wheel to help your client come up with actions. Write the goal at the top of the page and then ask them to write out the 8 actions or chunks of work that make up their goal. Tip: Ask them to put a date on each -- and they can use the pieces of pie to record % complete for each area until it's complete!Of course you're not limited to 8 segments -- it's just a useful number -- and an easy one to divide the wheel into! So, feel free to use fewer segments or split segments to get more.
And whatever we've used the wheel for I like to ask this question when complete, "So, if this wheel represented your life/relationship/career/marketing strategy, is it a bumpy ride?"
I hope this has given you some new ideas as to how you can work with and use 'The Wheel of Life' in your coaching practice. Give it a try - it's wheely good!

How To Increase Sales Tip - Just Stop By All That Business You Are Driving By

With small business owners comprising the largest segment of the economy, many of these entrepreneurial spirits must drive to their appointments, their networking events and to take care of those support administrative services such as mail, bank and supplies. Yet, this simple action is a hidden goal mine. Years ago, a close colleague revealed this gold mine to me when he made this simple statement: We drive by more business than we will ever have.

Just think about all those businesses you drive by each and every day? How many of them could use your products or services? What would happen if you set a plan to start visiting one new business each week or better yet each day?

Coaching

Now, you are probably thinking that is cold calling. You are absolutely 1000% correct. However, by not stopping in, by not cold calling, what is the potential loss?

How To Increase Sales Tip - Just Stop By All That Business You Are Driving By

Just think about all those other competitors who are driving by the same businesses? Are they also sharing some of these same or similar thoughts about cold calling?

I hate to cold call. Cold calling is a waste of time. I prefer what I am doing. Cold calling is for amateurs. I have enough sales/

Now instead of being a limitation thinker, turn the tables around and become a possibility thinker. What would happen if you began to believe:

I love to cold call? Cold calling is great way to fill in extra time? I prefer taking risks and doing what I have never done before? Cold calling is for professionals? I can always have more sales and more loyal customers?/

Take action right now and identify at least one business that you drive by every day or at least once a week. Make a decision to just stop by and see what happens. Who knows you just may make a friend that will help you get closer to where you want to go.
